The façade utilizes a mix of glass and limestone panel systems that are sourced locally and have excellent thermal performance and creates an identity that is prominent and recognizable. All windows are specified to minimise heat transfer, and are recessed to eliminate direct heat gain, and shaded with mashrabiya to reduce the air-conditioning requirement for internal comfort cooling. All wastewater generated onsite is treated by a local Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), the purified “grey water” will be re-used for irrigation of the vegetation. In the landscaping which incorporates robust planting that is drought tolerant, locally available, and typical of that found naturally in the vicinity to support the development of a high-quality, sustainable community in Al Khor.
Apart from serving the local medical needs, this fully integrated development will substantially increase the city’s professional and semi-professional population. The impact on local businesses, schools and other community facilities will be immediate and the scheme is intended to contribute to the social infrastructure for a liveable community and fulfil its growing needs.
The scheme offers residents, visitors, and users of the civic neighbourhood the opportunity to live and work in a contemporary and landscaped setting that is brought into the architecture and acts as extended living, working and for healthcare users, recovery spaces.
The layout has been oriented east/west to minimize solar gain and to offer a distinct brand recognition to the community it serves. The massing and scale of the architectural forms provide an open and welcoming image from the street. With entrance plaza and public drop-off area clearly identifiable from the curb frontage; patients and visitors are directed to the main entrance through a plaza where landscape, water features and clear bilingual signage guide them into the building, and beyond.
The entrance opens into a public concourse with a four-storey high atrium, which brings natural light into the heart of the building and welcomes patients and visitors alike. Clinical departments are accessed from this large, open, centrally placed concourse. Colour, light, landscape and the human-scale have been used to provide an all-important welcoming first impression, showcasing a commitment to quality of care and inspiring patient confidence, comfort, and staff motivation, from the moment they arrive.
This hospital reflects current healthcare delivery models representing a shift to more community-based, neighborhood ambulatory service with health and well-being clinics offered alongside clinical and surgical services. This concept of healthy living supports our clients’ belief in the paradigm shift from an illness-based model to a wellness-based one, and the passive and traditional sustainable design principles incorporated, demonstrate commitment to the local community, the natural environment and to the healing environment.
